Highlands Student Center
The Toughest Choice

Your toughest choice may be to decide whether you will go on to college. The percentage of high school students who go directly to college varies from state to state, from a low of 40.4% (Nevada) to a high of 68.7% (New York).

If you decide not to go on to college and you need to work, you can consider a career ranging from auto technician to veterinary assistant. The income from many of these occupations ranges from $35,000 to $45,000 per year, somewhat below the average for college graduates. However, many of these occupations are among those with the greatest potential for growth in employment and income, and for stability.

You can qualify for some of these occupations without college.

Some do require special training or apprenticeships; some special tests and licenses. In any event, you will advance faster, earn more money, and achieve greater gratification if you pick an occupation that is right for you. Many of these occupations offer increases in pay for length of service and experience. All of them require special skills which can only be developed with time and effort.
