Highlands Student Center
Start Early
Whenever you start but, preferably by your sophomore year you
should be investigating the occupations you are thinking of entering,
which high school courses would be best for you, and what kind of
education or training you will need after graduation. In order to find the
answers you need, we suggest that you do the following:
A First Step to Self-Knowledge
“A first step in deciding what to do after high school is to talk with your school counselor or a trusted teacher for advice. Ask your school counselor about taking an aptitude test or interest inventory to find your strengths, values, and interests and discover potential career choices that are right for you.”

Take the Highlands Ability Battery and discover or confirm the
abilities you were born with.
Take the Highlands Interest Survey and identify the things you
enjoy doing.
Build a list of occupations that make use of your abilities and
your interests.
Complete the Highlands Values Sort and remove from your list occupations that do not
reflect your values.
During your feedback conference, talk freely to our Affiliate about your hopes and ambitions
Develop a high school plan that enables you to build upon your abilities, values and interests.
Begin a survey of your choices after graduation. Consider all your options and pick those
that feel right to you.
